GDW football spotlight from Week 9:
Vinemont Eagles: Showing determination to not be taken down in a road game last Friday, the Eagles clinched a berth to the upcoming 3A playoffs by beating the Oakman Wildcats 20 to 7.
Vinemont knew Oakman would try to keep the Eagles' spirit down after they lost to a solid Gordo team the week before, dropping them into a tie for 3rd in 3A, Region 5 with the Wildcats.
The Eagles shook off a 7 to 6 halftime deficit with a TD and 2 point conversion in the 3rd to earn the lead. They added a score in the final quarter and kept Oakman from going into a comeback situation.
Vinemont is 7 & 2 for 2024 and has posted four wins on the road in five decisions.
This is the Eagles' best season since they compiled 7 victories in 2020 under current coach Stephen Robinson.
Vinemont has become a playoff participant in 3A football for the last five seasons.
The regular season ends for the Eagles Friday at home against Winfield, then they have a week off to get ready and take part in Round 1 of the postseason, most likely playing at Region 7 runner up Lauderdale County.
GDW player of the week spotlight:
Preston Gay and Cooper Loftin of Cullman: Gay, the QB for the Bearcats, ran for a touchdown and threw for a pair of scores.
Loftin rushed for three TDs with the Bearcats dominating Decatur and winning 42 to 14 at Ogle Stadium.
This clinched a playoff berth for the Bearcats in finishing 6A, Region 7 with a 3 & 3 mark.
Gay and Loftin anchored the Cullman offense that went to the locker room with a comfortable 28 to 0 advantage.
The Bearcats have won three of their last four games in securing their 2nd straight berth to the 6A playoffs under the command of coach Danny Stiff.
Cullman has Buckhorn coming to Britton Field/Woodard Stadium Friday to end the regular season schedule.
