GOOD HOPE: Seniors Addyson Burgess, Haley Lay, Natalie Miller and Brooklyn Lambert of Good Hope softball had their moments Monday on Senior Day in an 8 to 2 victory over the Cordova Blue Devils.
Burgess was the winning pitcher, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. She had 5 scoreless innings, keeping Cordova in check until they produced a run in the 4th to tie the score on a stolen base and throwing error at 3rd.
Cordova had two critical errors in the Good Hope half of the 4th.
Lambert executed a sacrifice bunt with Miller heading to 3rd on the play. A throw from the infield by Cordova got past the catcher and Miller was safe with the go ahead run for a 2 to 1 Lady Raiders lead.
Lay hit a fly ball to rightfield where it was misplayed by the center fielder and right fielder. A three base error was charged on the play as Kylee Smith and Campbell Koch scored for it to be a 5 run 4th and a 6 to 1 lead for Good Hope.
Lay came up with a big insurance hit in the 6th, a two run double that sent home Lizzy Steed who singled and Smith who reached base on a walk.
The game ended at 3:45 p.m. as rain arrived at the ball field for the final out of the game to be recorded by Burgess and her teammates.
Burgess, Miller and Lay were 2 for 3 in their final senior regular season game. Lay had 2 EBIs, Miller scored a run.
Lambert was credited with a run scored and a sacrifice.
Burgess was aided by good defense. Smith had five assists from her shortstop position. First baseman Molly Benefield turned in a double play from Burgess to herself and to Lay at home in the 4th with the game tied at 1 to 1 at the time.
