VINEMONT: Additions are being added to Vinemont High School located around the West Wing of the main campus building.
A ribbon cutting ceremony Monday afternoon was coordinated between the school and the Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE).
A library/media center is now in operation, as well as science lab/classroom, conference room and special education room.
Vinemont principal Robin Netherton handled the duties of cutting the ribbon while being joined by Cullman County Superintendent Shane Barnette, school board members Mike Graves (Vinemont), Gene Sullins (West Point) and other distinguished guests.
While going into the library/media room, Gameday Weekly got to visit with approximately 20 students who are taking journalism.
Assistant principal Todd Johnson told GDW the journalism course has been at Vinemont for approximately five years.
Mindy Conquest is the director of the library and the media center.
The students in journalism range from freshman to seniors.
They are responsible for providing information to the Eagle News Network, a system that is available online.
GDW is hoping these students will consider being in the media in the future after graduation.
"We encourage the young society to look at how great a career can be in the media from various opportunities," Johnny Thornton said.
"I want to understand what kind of interest from high school students we have at the schools based here in Cullman County for involvement with the media.
"I was very pleased to learn about these students in journalism class. That is how I got my career started when I attended Wallace State Community College in 1980 as a major in journalism."
Vinemont has been in the classroom since August 8, coming off a full week last week for the first time in the new school year.
The school is in high spirit for the start of the new athletic season will be going on by the weekend.
Vinemont volleyball will be at home Thursday for a tri match vs. Columbia and Cullman Christian School starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Eagles kick off the gridiron schedule Friday from Mark Smothers Stadium vs. the Falkville Blue Devils.
The game will be live on WKUL FM (92.1) with the contest to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Vinemont volleyball has an invitational on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m.
