GDW Analysis:
Fairview Aggies are the lone local prep football team ranked by the state sportswriters association.
The Aggies began the 2024 season 9th.
Now into the 3rd week of the schedule, Fairview has moved up to No. 5 in Class 5A play.
Fairview is 1 & 0, coming off a 41 to 17 victory last Friday at Springville. The win was No. 118 for coach George Redding that put him 2nd all time in victories by a county football coach, moving ahead of Ray Talley who coached at Hanceville from 1976 to 1990.
The Aggies play at Dafford Smith Stadium for the first time Friday. It's the 5A, Region 7 opener with the West Point Warriors paying a visit.
A former regional foe for Fairview, the Guntersville Wildcats, remain atop Class 5A. Guntersville is 2 & 0. Right behind Fairview this week as No. 6, the Scottsboro Wildcats.
Hanceville has a tough assignment this week, going to No. 2 Gordo in 3A, Region 5. The Bulldogs are 0 & 2 with large defeats to county teams Cold Springs and Holly Pond.
Gordo began the season two weeks ago clobbering Fayette Co 62 to 12 and last week, got past Bibb Co 36 to 35 in OT. Hanceville and Gordo tangle for the first time.
Decatur Heritage, who lost at Addison 36 to 20 last week, dropped to 8th in the 2A poll. Addison's win was the first of the season and 99th for current coach David Smothers. The Bulldogs are out of the Top 10 in Class 1A presently.
Outside the Top 10 in their class is the Athens Golden Eagles. Athens comes to Cullman Friday in 6A, Region 7 action with a 2 & 0 mark.
Another team from 6A, Region 7, the Hartselle Tigers are 1 & 1, on the outside looking in. They are idle this week.
