HOMEWOOD: An outstanding player locally at Fairview High School, Elijah Garrison is now embracing the opportunity to be the new basketball coach at Homewood High School.
Garrison was approved by the Homewood City School board this week to take over the Patriots program, that has been guided by Tim Shepler since 1995.
Homewood has experienced 17 seasons of pure success with better than 20 victories per campaign.
The 2023/24 season for Homewood would be 26 wins in 35 games, an area championship and berth to the Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State in Class 6A.
Garrison assisted Shepler last season.
Garrison has also coached at New Hope High School near the Huntsville.
The 2014 grad of Fairview was on two Cullman County championship teams with Greg Boatright his coach. That took place in 2011, his freshman year and 2013, his junior season.
Garrison was all Cullman County and all area in his final season with the Aggies in 2014.
He would go on and play for Lennie Acuff at the University of Alabama Huntsville.
Garrison played through the 2018 campaign for the team that is a member of the Gulf South Conference.
He showed greatness in the classroom, earning a spot on the GSC All Academic team in 2017.
He worked with Acuff and the Charger staff after his playing days before getting into coaching in the AHSAA.
Garrison is the executive director of the Alabama Association of Basketball Coaches (AABC).
The AABC held its 2nd annual coaches clinic in early May down in Gulf Shores.
Garrison's first season at Homewood will have the Patriots in AHSAA 6A, Area 9 with Parker, Minor and Jackson-Olin of the Birmingham area.
