Gameday Weekly pays tribute to the Top 10 football coaches all time in the Cullman County school system.
The poll consists of how successful each were while guiding a program. Three of them handled two teams in the county during their tenure.
Four are currently honored for being a member of the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame.
 
The rankings:
 
1. Mark Smothers - 129 wins, 83 at Vinemont, 46 at Hanceville.
2. Ray Talley - 117 wins at Hanceville
2. George Redding - 117 wins at Fairview
4. Dafford Smith - 89 wins, 64 at Fairview, 25 at West Point
5. Billy Joe Pugh - 86 wins at Good Hope
6. Alan Scott - 71 wins, 53 at Good Hope, 18 at Vinemont
7. Rod Elliott - 60 wins at Cold Springs
8. Don Farley - 54 wins at West Point
9. Billy Coleman - 48 wins at West Point
10. Michael Simmons - 45 wins at West Point
Smothers' best season at Vinemont was 11 & 2 in 1988, his best at Hanceville was 10 & 2 in 1995.
Redding's 12 & 2 season in 2021 is the best he has had in 18 seasons at Fairview.
Smith coached 15 years of high school in the county. At West Point, the Warriors went 7-2-1 in 1973. His best Fairview team came in 1994 at 10 & 3.
Talley took Hanceville to 12 wins out of 14 games in the '85 schedule.
For Pugh, the Raiders compiled a 10 & 2 record in 1983, his best in coaching here for 16 years.
Scott took Vinemont to 8 wins in 11 tries in 2012. In his time at Good Hope, the 11 & 2 run in 2018 is the best for him at his alma mater.
Coleman led West Point to 12 wins and a loss in 1994.
Elliott compiled a pair of 8 & 3 seasons at Cold Springs in 2003 and 2014.
For Simmons, the Warriors recorded 8 wins and 3 losses in 2004.
In regular season play, Smothers, Redding, Smith, Pugh and Scott have gone 9 & 1 in several seasons.
Coleman's 10 & 0 record at West Point in 1994 is the best of a full schedule.
The '77 team for Hanceville with Talley ended regular season undefeated in nine games.
 
Note:
 
Mark Britton has the most wins at Cullman in 137 in 17 years, adding 17 he collected in 3 years at Fairview before he became the Bearcats' coach in 2001.
Oliver Woodard earned greatness at Cullman for 106 wins, 40 losses and 6 ties from 1959 until 1973. His 1962 team was undefeated and earned state championship honors by the Birmingham News.
Smothers, Talley, Smith and Pugh are the coaches honored by the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame. Talley was the first of this foursome to be inducted in its inaugural year of 2000.
Redding has the opportunity to move ahead of Talley with his next victory at Fairview.
Redding and Talley have compiled 117 victories at one county school, the most ever.
Talley was at Hanceville from 1977 until 1990.
Redding entered the coaching ranks at Fairview in 2007.
The Aggies have been the best in the county the last five seasons at 47 & 13, winning 26 of 31 games in regional play.
