VINEMONT: A local softball team that has caught momentum at a good time in the season is Hanceville.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 3A, Area 12 with 3 wins in 3 tries this week.
The latest was an astounding 17 to 7 come from behind victory at Turney/Gingrich Field Friday against the Vinemont Lady Eagles.
Hanceville prevented Vinemont from finishing 7 & 1 in the area. With the Lady Eagles suffering the loss, the Area 12 tournament will be hosted by Locust Fork next weekend.
Locust Fork is 7 & 1 in the area, Vinemont 2nd at 6 & 2 and Hanceville 3rd by winning 5 of 8 area games.
Friday's game began well for Vinemont after Hanceville got a run in the 1st on Alex Twitty scoring on a base hit by Josi Jones.
Vinemont would deliver 4 in the 2nd on a couple of infield singles that drove in a pair of runs.
A ball hit to 1st by Abby Kuykendall was misplayed by the 1st baseman when she lost the ball in the sun.
Two runs scored and the Lady Eagles went ahead.
Two batters later, Haley Millwood got an infield single and 2 runs dashed home to make it a 4 to 1 lead for Vinemont.
In the Vinemont 5th, Tori Vines blasted a two run single scoring Alaina Sandlin and Kylee Metzger.
At the end of the 5th, Vinemont was ahead of Hanceville 7 to 3.
Vines was having a good outing in the circle. The right hander had yielded three runs on six hits through 5 innings.
How the game changed into Hanceville's favor in the 6th was due to six hits by Hanceville batters in their first 8 plate appearances in the inning.
RBIs came on hits from Zoe Pitts, Jones, 2 RBIs from a double by Karrigan Pipkin, a run scoring single by Isabella Spinks, Jones with a 2 run double.
In all, Hanceville had 14 runs on 11 hits with 19 batters being a part of a superb inning for the visitors.
Jones scored on Spinks' single and when the inning closed out, Hanceville led Vinemont 17 to 7.
Jones, who relieved Spinks in the 5th, retired the Lady Eagles in the 6th on a groundout and 2 strikeouts.
The contest ended at 6:24 p.m. being played in 2 hours.
For the week, Hanceville outscored area foes JB Pennington, Holly Pond and Vinemont by a total of 44 runs to 11.
Hanceville run ruled Pennington Tuesday 16 to 4, shut out Holly Pond 11 to 0 Thursday before the comeback Friday in keeping Vinemont from finishing tied for 1st in the area.
Kuykendall, the only senior for Vinemont, celebrated her birthday with two hits in three at bats.
She had a two run single in the 2nd, a single in the 4th and walked in the 5th.
Vinemont and Hanceville will see one another in the opening round of the area tournament from Locust Fork next weekend.
