GDW Analysis:
WEST POINT: As Gameday Weekly anticipated, very good AHSAA volleyball was played Tuesday in a tri match with West Point, Cullman and Addison.
West Point was the first winner, getting past Cullman 25 to 20 and 25 to 23, ending Cullman's 4 match winning streak.
Cullman then knocked off Addison 25 to 15, 21 to 25 and 15 to 5 in the tiebreaking set. This was Cullman's first victory away from Bearcat Arena.
Addison prevented a West Point sweep in the nightcap by 25 to 19, 21 to 25 and 15 to 10 in Game 3.
This marked the 7th tiebreaking set covered by GDW since last Thursday when Cullman edged Austin 2 games to 1.
West Point vs. Cullman:
West Point stepped on to the floor at Jim Boyd Gym and played well by getting the lead on Cullman. A net block from Laklin Shadix off a serve by Caitlee Simmons lifted the Lady Warriors to an 11 to 4 lead in the first set.
Cullman did get a reverse call from the officials to stay in the set with a kill to close to 24 to 20. West Point won the first set by a kill from Kelsye Will on the left side near the net.
The two rivals got into exchanging the lead on the scoreboard in the 2nd set.
Cullman led 8 to 7 on a service point by Karina Harris, West Point would go ahead when Shadix converted an ace to make it 10 to 9.
Adrianna Owens delivered a kill with the Lady Warriors up 17 to 12. Shadix netted a block and a kill by Maci Brown made it 22 to 16 for the home team.
Cullman did not surrender. Blakely Brannon went on a surge of five consecutive points as they narrowed it to 24 to 23.
West Point ended the match at 5:23 p.m. when Owens connected on a kill and a 25 to 23 score. The match was played in 50 minutes.
Cullman vs. Addison:
Cullman coach Amy Hudson saw her Lady Bearcats regroup in facing No. 1 Addison in the 2nd battle of the tri match.
Her unit was more explosive in attacking in this matchup.
Three kills, two by Brannon and one from JerrieSue Godbee had Cullman up in the opener 13 to 8.
Harris had a kill to make it 19 to 15 then Millie Jenkins won the first set with five straight points, two of them aces and Cullman held a 1 to 0 lead.
Addison fought back with Mattie Johnson a highlight in Game 2. Johnson scored 13 in a row for the Lady Bulldogs as they took it 25 to 21 and send the contest into a tiebreaker.
Brannon showed her stuff on serve to put Cullman up in Game 3 at 5 to 1. Harris produced a kill and two aces by Lily Nixon had them up at 8 to 2.
The last five points were scored on serves from Harris with two kills by Brannon and one from Godbee to complete the match in 59 minutes, ending at 6:49 p.m.
Addison vs. West Point:
The finale of Addison and West Point was played in 59 minutes. Addison held the advantage in the first set by good play from Johnson, Katie Barrett, Ava Bartlett, Calie Garrison and Anna Beth Powell.
A kill by Barrett broke West Point's serve and the final two points were scored from the service area by Johnson in a 25 to 19 triumph.
West Point got the series even by victory in the 2nd set. Owens tallied a kill off a Shadix serve to put the Lady Warriors ahead to stay, 21 to 20. Two more kills by Owens, a kill from Katie Beth Yovino and a kill by Owens ended the 2nd game as the two would close out a great night of volleyball with another tiebreaker.
Addison went ahead 5 to 0 on service points by Johnson and a kill from Barrett.
West Point worked its way back in contention on a kill from Shadix and two by Brown to narrow it to 13 to 10.
Addison then got a kill by Bartlett and finished the match at 8:02 p.m. on a serve by Garrison.
As the match concluded, Hudson's Lady Bearcats stood at 5 & 5 on the season, Meagan Cagle's Lady Warriors are 8 & 7 and Kaydi Woodard's Lady Bulldogs have 7 wins against 3 losses.
