GDW Analysis:
FAIRVIEW: One upset happened in the Cullman County Middle School Basketball tournament Tuesday in quarterfinal play.
Another one almost happened as well.
No. 2 seed Good Hope wiped out a sluggish first half to move on to the semifinals after a 39 to 35 comeback victory against No. 7 Holly Pond.
The surprise was in Game 2 with 5 seed Fairview outscoring 4 seed Parkside 10 to 5 in the final half and claim a 29 to 20 triumph.
No. 1 seed West Point romped over 8th seed Hanceville 54 to 16.
No. 3 Cold Springs earned a 52 to 37 victory vs. No. 6 Vinemont.
Good Hope's win over Holly Pond:
After a 7 to 7 tie in the first, Holly Pond got 3 FGs by Jonathan Hamby and a couple of FGs by Tyler Cunningham to gain a 22 to 13 lead on the Raiders at the half.
A strength of Good Hope came alive in the 3rd. The Raiders hit 5 treys and were down 31 to 30 when the period ended.
Sean Jones earned a three plus a FG and FT for 6 big points off the bench for Good Hope in the 4th.
Cullen Phillips, Carsyn Boorsama and Memphis Johnson each scored 8 for the Raiders.
Hamby and Cunningham accounted for 12 each for Holly Pond with Kort Freeman scoring 5.
Fairview remains in contention with comeback:
Fairview used very balance scoring in posting its comeback victory over Parkside.
The Aggies were down 15 to 9 at the half. A 10 to 4 run in the 3rd by the Aggies got them a tie game at 19 to 19 when play continued into the 4th.
The Aggies allowed the Panthers 1 point in the final period with two treys and four of eight made FTs.
Houston Gardner got 6 for Fairview, Jake Pearson 5, Ashton Knop 5, Brandon Acklin 4, Aiden Jones 4.
For Parkside, Rowan Ibraham led the Panthers with 7.
West Point too superior for Hanceville in 1st game:
Leading 15 to 7 when the first ended, West Point stormed the net with a 19 to 0 run in the 2nd to enjoy a 34 to 7 lead at the break.
Gauge Riggs ripped the cords for 13 for West Point, Tripp Dingler 9, Leelan Ortiz scored 8 and Olen Freeman 6 on a pair of threes.
Cold Springs is hot early to eliminate Vinemont:
Cold Springs was led by 4 FGs in the first from forward Brooks Belcher that carried the Eagles to a 20 to 4 lead on Vinemont.
The Eagles held a 35 to 16 advantage at the half and led 47 to 24 going to the 4th.
Belcher completed the quarterfinal with 19 points, Brandon Chasteen tallied 11 and Jordan Garmon netted 9.
Vinemont PG Kaleb Speegle delivered 5 FGs, 3 treys and led the Eagles with 13 points. Travis Spear produced 6.
