WEST POINT: Getting started in strong fashion, the West Point Lady Warriors let it be known to Russellville Golden Tigers Friday evening the 5A, Area 15 regular season title would be claimed.
West Point rolled over Russellville 64 to 36 on WKUL FM (92.1) to finish 4 & 0 in the area, That gives the Lady Warriors home court for the area tournament to be played in early February.
A 21 to 6 advantage through 8:00 was a key for John Welborn's squad to extend their winning streak in January to 5 games.
The Lady Warriors have scored 366 points this month, an average of 73.2 per contest.
West Point has 17 wins in 21 games and now sets its sights on the Cullman County Tournament next week at Wallace State.
Seven players earned scoring honors in the half with West Point leading 41 to 15.
At the end of the 3rd, the Lady Warriors enjoyed a 59 to 24 cushion and a running clock in the final stanza.
Camryn Faulkner ripped the cords for 15, Laklin Shadix scored 12, Caitlee Simmons 11, Kenadi Pagan 7, Kealie Harbison 6, Jaleyn Faulkner 5, Patton Fell 6 and Mary Beth Penn 2.
Russellville fell to 4 & 9 and 1 & 2 in the area. Sophomore Ella Copeland gave the Golden Tigers a good outing with 18 and 10 came from junior center Laila Hill.
West Point plays Cold Springs Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to open the county tournament.
