GDW Analysis:
One of the top prep basketball players the last two years will not finish his career with a program in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).
Caleb Holt from Buckhorn has confirmed through media reports, he has transferred to Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia.
Holt was an impact player for Buckhorn with the Bucks winning back to back AHSAA state championships in 2023 and 2024.
Holt showed how talented he is, in being named Mr. Basketball in 2024 after completing his sophomore season with the 6A school in Madison County.
Local basketball fans had a chance to see the talented Holt perform the last two years in the Northwest Regional from Wallace State's Tom Drake Coliseum.
In 2023, Buckhorn claimed the championship by defeating the Cullman Bearcats and Pinson Valley Indians.
This past season, the Bucks were back, taking care of Clay Chalkville in the semifinals and knocking off Cullman in the title round.
He was named MVP of the regional.
Gameday Weekly followed Holt and his squad in their time they came to Cullman County in consecutive seasons.
"Caleb Holt is for sure, a smooth and talented basketball player," Flash of GDW reported. "Tremendous with his skills, he is worthy of what he has accomplished so far after two years playing in a large classification of the AHSAA."
GDW sees it this way. No question Holt is one of the best from outside this area to come into the hoops environment like what the Northwest Regional offers every February enroute to winning the grand prize the following week from Legacy Arena at the BJCC.
WKUL FM broadcaster Rich Jesse got to call both Buckhorn games in the regional vs. Cullman. It's easy to say that the local play by play voice of hoops on 92.1 FM was astonished for the talent he displays and still has two more years left in his prep career, now that will continue in the state of Georgia.
Buckhorn's win against Cullman in the 2024 championship at Wallace drew plenty of fans and others as well.
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl was among those attending the contest February 21.
Holt has a large list of collegiate programs that hope to have him once he graduates.
Holt also has been a participant with the USA 17 under national team. Team USA recently won the FIBA championship in Turkey by romping over a team from Italy in the finals 129 to 88.
Basketball locally is admired by fans and the media once the season is off and going.
The excitement is magnified when prep games take place at Wallace, such as the Cullman County tournament and the Northwest Regional. This has been a part of hoops culture since the mid 1990s.
Despite the loss of Holt, Buckhorn is to be considered a good team going into 2024/25. The Bucks had three seniors to graduate off their prior squad and also have a talent in senior to be Fred Derrick, who was the 6A Final Four MVP and recently play in the annual North vs. South all star game in Montgomery.
One of Derrick's teammates in the mid summer classic was shooting guard Jake Dorough from Cullman.
