GDW Analysis:
Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) held its June meeting Thursday afternoon inside the board's conference room.
The first item that took place was the board honoring the Cold Springs outdoor track and field team.
The Eagles capped off a great 2023/24 season in repeating as outdoor state champions in the 2A division. They accomplished the task the first weekend in May from Mark Britton Field/Oliver Woodard Stadium at Cullman High School.
Coach Casey Howell addressed the crowd of saying this was a triple crown for the school. They won the cross country title last November and excelled as indoor track champions in January from the Crossplex in Birmingham.
Cold Springs has pulled off this accomplishment in the last two athletic years.
The team displayed their rings to the crowd and were honored by their school board representative, Wayne Myrex as well as Cullman County Superintendent Shane Barnette.
Also from the monthly meeting, the board approved the hiring of a new baseball and football coach at Holly Pond High School.
Todd Carter takes over the baseball program. He comes to Holly Pond after being an assistant coach for the last 12 years at James Clemens High School in the Madison area.
Will McDaniel was approved to be the Broncos' new football coach. McDaniel has been in Cullman County the last three years as defensive coordinator at Hanceville High School.
This is the first time for Carter and McDaniel to be a head coach in the AHSAA.
On the day before the board meeting, GDW learned a change in the baseball leadership at Good Hope High School.
Noah Holder has been approved to take over the Raiders after Mitch Witcher retired following 21 years coaching at his alma mater.
An approval by the board was passed for 2023/24 non faculty coaches. The contingent was agreed upon completion of requirements by the board's athletic regulations.
The board approved a request from Vinemont High School to pay Todd Johnson $2,000 for additional summer athletic director duties. This will be paid by local school funds.
The next meeting of the CCBOE will take place July 11 at 3:30 p.m. inside the board's conference room.
