Cullman Bearcats are a victory away from clinching the AHSAA 6A, Area 13 baseball title.
The Bearcats defeated Mortimer Jordan 4 to 1 Tuesday at Bill Shelton Field in the opener.
The series now heads to Jefferson County with Game 2 Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The game will be live on 98.3 FM.
Cullman is 3 & 0 in the area standings while Mortimer Jordan won 2 of 3 recently against Jasper.
Both will be going to the playoffs representing Area 13 against the winner and runner up from Area 16 of 6A.
A scoreless battle was broken when the 'Cats tallied four in the 2nd to take the lead.
Mortimer Jordan earned a run in its half of the 3rd before the 'Cats stopped them from scoring any more the rest of the way.
Cooper Loftin pitched six good innings for Brent Patterson's squad, a week after he threw a complete game 1 to 0 shutout at Jasper.
Griffin Wright came in the 7th and got credit with a save.
April has been a good month for the 'Cats. Four wins so far with each being an area encounter.
Cullman has given up just 6 runs in area play, a total of 27 innings.
