GDW Analysis:
A pair of former basketball coaches locally have enjoyed the 2024/25 season at a new location.
Natasha Smallwood spent 12 years leading the Susan Moore Lady Bulldogs. Her last four seasons resulted in 111 wins & 17 losses with three trips to the AHSAA Final Four.
After the 2023/24 season, Smallwood accepted an offer and is coaching at Albertville High School.
Albertville caught 7A hoops by storm with 29 wins out of 32 games. The Lady Aggies were to play Thursday morning against an elite in 7A play, the Hoover Lady Bucs for the regional title from Jacksonville State in the NE Region.
Albertville was ranked 8th in the final 7A poll while Hoover claimed No. 3 behind Hillcrest Tuscaloosa and Vestavia.
Smallwood earned two championships from the Northwest Regional at Wallace State in 2021 and 2022, defeating Lauderdale County and Elkmont for the top prize.
Cade Willingham coached one season at Cold Springs before he got an offer to return home to his alma mater, Plainview High School.
Plainview moved into 4A ball this season and the results have been tremendous.
Willingham has guided the Bears to 23 wins in 28 games and a title in the Northeast Region.
Second ranked Plainview outlasted No.4 Madison Academy 58 to 53 Wednesday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Willingham played on the 2018 state championship squad at Plainview. He then got into coaching and was an assistant at Tuscaloosa County when he got a call from Cold Springs and came to Cullman County for the 2023/24 season.
Willingham is a young coach for being in his mid 20s.
Plainview will be playing Fairfield Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Final Four from Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Class 4A.
