GDW prep football team spotlight from Week 3:
GOOD HOPE RAIDERS: Good Hope has gone 2 & 0 to start the 2024 AHSAA schedule.
The Raiders are the Gameday Weekly team in our spotlight following a hard fought 7 to 6 victory over the Fultondale Wildcats that was carried live on WKUL FM (92.1).
Good Hope has shown steady play in two assignments and has rebounded following a trip to Fyffe August 23 in a fall jamboree.
The Raiders are currently the best defensive team in the county. Alan Scott's Raiders have allowed one touchdown and one field goal against them.
The Raiders have held the opposition scoreless for six of eight quarters.
Good Hope stopped a potential Fultondale scoring drive late in the 2nd quarter when the Raiders recovered a backward pass (lateral) at their 23 yard line.
They forced a Fultondale fumble early in the 3rd that gave them good field position to drive 30 yards for the lone TD they would put on the scoreboard at James Shabel Stadium in their home opener and regional opener.
The Raiders avenged a loss to the Wildcats from 2023 and have 5 wins in 7 decisions against this school from Jefferson County.
Good Hope shares the regional lead with Haleyville and Hamilton after one game in 4A, Region 5 play.
GDW athlete spotlight of the week:
Tyler Cone and Landon Bagwell of the Good Hope Raiders.
Cone was inserted as the signal caller when Parker Johnson could not play due to an injury.
Cone handled it well vs. a strong Fultondale defense that had some athleticism and size.
Cone would get the Raiders into the end zone early in the 3rd on a 15 yard pass to Bagwell. This happened after the Raiders recovered a fumble at the Fultondale 30.
While getting the lone score for the Raiders, Bagwell was a standout on the defensive side.
Bagwell and his defensive friends never allowed Fultondale to move the ball deep toward the Good Hope end zone.
The Raiders would force three turnovers, one stopping a drive by Fultondale late in the 2nd and the fumble early in the 3rd that gave Good Hope field position to break a scoreless tie.
Bagwell and the defense have yielded 1 TD and 1 FG in hard fought wins at West Point and at home vs. Fultondale for a 2 & 0 start.
