VARSITY:
West Point Warriors
Jaxson Shelton of West Point
West Point closed out December with three come from behind victories in the West Point Christmas Classic.
The Warriors defeated East Lawrence 65 to 57, 67 to 60 over Corner in the semifinals and Decatur Heritage 68 to 52 in the title game December 28.
West Point trailed at halftime of each contest and had good play in the 3rd period to get the lead and take a 16 & 3 record into January.
Shelton played well for coach Mason Voce in the three games of the classic.
Shelton had 16 in the win over East Lawrence, 11 in the game against Corner and 19 in the title bout with Decatur Heritage.
He accounted for 46 points, averaging 15.5 per game and was named the Gameday Weekly Most Outstanding Player.
Shelton was part of a balanced attack in the finals with 4 FGs in the 2nd half and part of a 35 to 16 surge in the 2nd half to turn a possible loss into victory at Jim Boyd Gymnasium against a strong 2A squad from the River City.
GIRLS:
Holly Pond Lady Broncos
Ava Thomas of Holly Pond
Holly Pond spent the weekend in the West Morgan Classic.
The Lady Broncos earned wins over Rogers 45 to 39 and against Lexington 47 to 35. Their game on December 28 was cancelled due to the threat of severe weather.
Mary Hartline's unit was not at full strength against Rogers as three starters were sidelined due to flu like symptoms.
Holly Pond was in good health on Monday with Lexington, getting control of the game by a 15 to 6 run in the 2nd period with three shots from long distance a key to their success.
Thomas tallied 19 points in the win over Rogers and scored 15 vs. Lexington to compile 34 points and a 17 point average in the classic.
Thomas hit a three pointer in the 3rd and was five of seven from the foul line.
Holly Pond has 13 wins against 5 losses and went 7 & 1 during the month of December.
