GDW Analysis:
GOOD HOPE: Rainy weather greeted Good Hope's 7 on 7 passing camp Thursday morning.
Showers came into the area before the event began at 9:00 a.m. with the conditions not the best to display passing offenses vs. passing defenses by the participants.
But the teams showed toughness in looking to carry out half a dozen rounds of assignments with games held at James Shabel Stadium, plus practice fields nearby.
Joining the Good Hope Raiders locally were the Cold Springs Eagles, Hanceville Bulldogs and Vinemont Eagles.
Others that came to the event outside the county included Hayden, JB Pennington and Southeastern from Blount County, Chelsea from Shelby County and Danville from Morgan County.
Gameday Weekly visited with coaches Alan Scott of Good Hope, Brendan Voce of Cold Springs, Levi Estes of Hanceville and Stephen Robinson of Vinemont before game time.
Estes is the new member of the county coaches, who is originally from the West side of Tennessee.
The setup for 7 on 7 is a field marked off of 40 yards, looking to move the ball downfield in three sets of series.
The games were played in a span of 25 minutes with a 10 minute break included after each segment.
In the opening series, Good Hope was up against Vinemont, Cold Springs took on Southeastern and Hayden played Pennington while Danville was the odd team out.
By lunch time, everybody had faced one another with a total of five rounds of throwing the ball despite wet conditions.
Good Hope was out to get reps for its two quarterbacks, lefthander Parker Johnson and junior Ayden Black.
Leading Vinemont as its signal caller is senior Rush Sandlin. Vinemont is a team that does not put the ball in the air that often.
Coach Robinson told GDW before game time the most the Eagles could go to the passing attack in a game would be 10 times. Vinemont is a running type program from the formations the Eagles display on Friday nights.
Handling the snaps for the Eagles are junior Ethan Day and sophomore Eli Voce.
Hunter Black is experienced at QB for Hanceville with Estes entering his inaugural season.
Black had a series on contributions to the team as a freshman and is eager to provide leadership in a key personnel role on the field.
Andro Williams waits his 4th season with Danville. The 2024 season sees Danville moving up to 4A play with the Hawks to be in Region 7.
The 11th season for Hayden with Keith Register will be in 2024. The Wildcats must deal with plenty of opponents from the Birmingham area in Region 5 of 5A. They include Briarwood Christian, Carver, John Carroll, Ramsay, Wenonah and nearby rival Corner.
New to the Pennington sideline is Jordan Cantrell. Cantrell has 11 years as a head coach with the last two seasons in the Southern part of the state at Florala.
The AHSAA allows football teams three weeks in July to go through 7 on 7 sessions at their convenience.
Teams that did not conduct a spring jamboree can start fall practice on Monday. Locally, that means Cold Springs, Hanceville, Holly Pond, Cullman, Fairview and West Point can.
Good Hope and Vinemont played each other in the spring, therefore, they have to wait to begin workouts on Monday, August 5.
