GDW Analysis:
TUSCALOOSA: Nick Saban may not be coaching Alabama football any longer, but he remains as an impact person in a new role and a new situation as well.
Saban spent the past week as an analyst for the SEC Network in its coverage of SEC Media Days from Dallas.
On Friday, the recently retired coach was given a tremendous honor by the University.
The Board of Trustees have renamed the facility Saban Field at Bryant Denny Stadium.
"We are humbled that The University of Alabama has honored us with the naming of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium," said Saban. "The remarkable success that the football program has achieved over the past 17 years is a reflection of the hard work of many student-athletes, coaches and staff. Being leader of the process at Alabama has been the greatest privilege of my life. Terry and I are grateful for the naming of Saban Field, which forever celebrates our accomplishments."
Saban left a lasting memory for Tide fans as Alabama claimed six national championships in his 17 years he was at the capstone.
The Tide endured 206 victories with Saban and only 29 losses, a winning percentage of .870.
In the SEC, Alabama was 120 & 18, going 31 & 1 since 2020 in the well known conference in college football.
Bama won the SEC championship last season, defeating Georgia in the title game in Atlanta.
That carried the Tide to the college football playoff semifinal. Alabama was knocked out of title contention in the Rose Bowl with a loss to eventually national champion Michigan.
Bama was officially ranked 5th in the final coaches poll.
"We are thrilled to honor Coach Saban with the naming of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium," said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. "He is one of the greatest coaches of all time, impacting countless lives far beyond football. What he and Ms. Terry mean to The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa community is immeasurable. They continue to be tremendous ambassadors, and we look forward to celebrating with them in September.
The celebration of renaming the field for Saban will take place at halftime of the Tide's game vs. South Florida September 7.
