HUNTSVILLE: Given the opportunity to make his point in the quest of high grade coaching from the high school ranks to collegiate basketball, Faron Key accomplished the feat Saturday for Wallace State Community College.
Key's inaugural year in the Alabama Community College (ACCC) has resulted in winning the conference by outscoring Southern Union 98 to 90 at the University of Alabama Huntsville.
Key, who came to Wallace after becoming the winningest coach in Hartselle High School history, displayed the hard work that was needed in to make his point and keep the Lions on top of the conference for a 2nd consecutive year.
The Lions won the 2024 ACCC title at UAH against Bishop State under Allen Sharpe.
Sharpe then got recruited into the 4 year role of coaching, now leading the UAH Lady Chargers to the Gulf South Conference championship game Sunday in Birmingham at Samford University.
The Lions regrouped after an 80 to 69 loss at Calhoun in early February. Wallace went on a good run to win its final six regular season games and head to UAH as the top seed of ACCC Division I.
From defeating Lawson State 98 to 84 in the semifinals and then coming from behind against Southern Union, the high scoring Lions have maintained that style in which they are putting well than 90 points on the scoreboard in each game and having three wins in the current surge of 100 or more.
Wallace thrives on the long range shot. The Lions took 36 and made 12 in the title game. Tournament MVP Arthur Johnson was 3 of 7 with all tournament selection KJ Anderson 4 of 10.
Johnson led the Lions with 28 points, getting great assistance from Christian Thompson scoring 22, Antonio Cochran 20 and Anderson with 17.
Four starters weaving their togetherness to tally 87 points, now with 26 victories out of 31 games and an 8 game winning streak.
Thompson put up a double-double of 22 points on 9 of 11 FGs and a game high 19 rebounds.
Josh Page served a huge role in ball handling, delivering 8 assists as the Lions had 20 and turned the ball over only 9 times.
Key played for the Lions in the early 1990s under Paul Brown after having a good career at West Point High School.
Brown has seen his former guard a few times with it being positive every time the two would get together for a conversation.
The Lions and the Lady Lions enjoyed coming back to campus Saturday evening with a championship trophy, a championship net and more work to do as both have qualified for the NJCAA tournament.
