GDW Analysis:
Three weeks remain for regional play in AHSAA football for 2024.
Of the 8 teams covered by Gameday Weekly, some are moving forward in the quest to clinch a berth from the perspective region.
Four teams currently have a winning record against their regional foes. The other four have a victory, but at least two losses as they are now with their backs against the wall.
This is how our teams are currently after playing on Friday, October 4 in their respective region:
Fairview Aggies:
Aggies are 4 & 0 in 5A, Region 7 after their thrilling 50 to 49 victory in triple OT at Russellville.
Fairview can clinch the top seed in the region with a victory vs. Priceville this Friday from Dafford Smith Stadium.
Aggies have Priceville and East Limestone left to play in the region.
Good Hope Raiders:
The Raiders have a 4 & 0 mark in 4A, Region 5 and tied for the lead with Dora (4 & 0).
Both are 2 games up on Hamilton, Fultondale and Fayette Co. Good Hope is hosting Hamilton Friday. Dora is at home to play Cordova.
The Raiders and Dora play at Good Hope October 25.
Vinemont Eagles:
After their 56 to 30 win against Hanceville, Vinemont is in a 3 way tie for 2nd with Gordo and Oakman. All are 3 & 1.
Winfield is tops in the region at 4 & 0.
Vinemont gets Gordo to visit Mark Smothers Stadium this week.
The Eagles then go to Oakman the 18th and host Winfield on the 25th.
Cullman Bearcats:
Bearcats will have to settle for No. 4 from Class 6A, Region 7.
Cullman has lost to Athens, Hartselle and Muscle Shoals.
Muscle Shoals is 4 & 0, Hartselle 3 & 0 in the region with Athens 2 & 1 then Cullman 1 & 3.
Cullman entertains Columbia for homecoming and will finish region play at Decatur the 18th.
The Bearcats will need to defeat Columbia and Decatur to be a playoff qualifier.
Cold Springs Eagles:
Being good on the road this season has the Eagles in the hunt in AHSAA 2A, Region 6.
After beating West End 26 to 12, the Eagles are in 2nd with Southeastern at 2 & 1.
Coosa Christian leads with a 4 & 0 record.
The Eagles visit Coosa Christian this week then close out region play at home with Southeastern on the 18th and Falkville the 25th.
Holly Pond Broncos:
Holly Pond has to absorb the pain from a 25 to 24 loss in 3A, Region 8 to Whitesburg Christian.
The Broncos stand at 1 & 3 in the region.
Fyffe is 1st at 4 & 0, followed by Geraldine and Sylvania 3 & 1, then Whitesburg and Collinsville 2 & 2.
Holly Pond visits Asbury Friday then is at Fyffe on the 18th and vs. Collinsville the 25th.
West Point Warriors:
Winning in the final seconds over Priceville 28 to 21 keeps the Warriors alive in 5A, Region 7.
West Point is 1 & 2, sharing the 4th position with Priceville and Ardmore.,
The Warriors go to East Limestone Friday. East is 0 & 3.
Fairview leads the region with Russellville 2nd and Lawrence County in 3rd place.
The Warriors have Russellville coming to West Point the 18th and play at Ardmore the 25th.
The top four teams per region will go to the AHSAA playoffs.
The No. 1 seed will crossover and play a 4 seed with No. 2 at home in the 1st round to meet a 3 seed.
Teams in Region 5 will face teams in Region 7 in the opening round.
Those in Region 6 will battle it out with a team from Region 8.
The AHSAA playoffs will start the weekend of November 7.
