GDW Analysis:
VINEMONT: Run oriented Vinemont lived up to its reputation in the WKUL FM (92.1) season opener Friday vs. arch rival Falkville from Mark Smothers Stadium.
The Eagles got the lead and was able to hold on to it, beating Falkville 16 to 14.
That was good for the Eagles after last year on opening night, they fell in the final minute to their rival from Morgan County 26 to 20.
Vinemont gained an edge in field position that would lead them to its first score.
Forcing Falkville to punt deep in its territory, Vinemont started at the 47 with 5:18 to go in the first and would end the 53 yard drive with a TD run from Josh Rhodes from a yard out at 9:58 of the 2nd.
A 2 point run by Rhodes pushed the Eagles to an 8 to 0 advantage.
That stayed until a bad snap with Vinemont in punt formation lost 33 yards. Falkville recovered at the Eagles' 20 and two plays were in the end zone on a TD run from the 18.
Vinemont stopped the Devils on a two point try and would end the half with an 8 to 6 lead.
The Eagles held the upper hand in controlling the football during the 3rd.
On the first play of the 4th, a four yard run by Chad Reynolds and a two point score made it 16 to 6 for the home team.
That advantage got shreeded on the kickoff when the Blue Devils returned it 82 yards and a two point conversion had them behind 16 to 14.
Stephen Robinson's Eagles were able to display good field position in the 4th, moving the ball well on to Falkville's side and take time off the clock.
They got a first down late in the red zone and went into victory formation in the final minute of play.
The victory for the Eagles carries confidence for Vinemont will be on the road the next three weeks.
Next week the Eagles will head into Blount County for a game at Southeastern High School.
Kickoff on August 30 will be at 7:00 p.m.
