ALABASTER: Clicking on all cylinders in the last two weeks, Wallace State softball accomplished its goal in claiming another conference championship.
The Lady Lions finished the task Saturday at Veterans Park by a 3 to 0 shutout of Southern Union in the championship.
Coach Lauren Stewart's Lady Lions tallied three victories during their 3 day visit to the complex. Wallace romped over Northwest Shoals 11 to 2, defeated Snead State 5 to 3 before they pulled off a title game shutout of upset minded Southern Union.
The Lady Lions currently have a 10 game winning streak and will go to the nationals with 35 wins and 12 losses. Seven of these victories have come during this month.
Four sophomores for the Lady Lions raised their performance level in earning a spot on the all tournament team.
Pitcher Katie Simon was the MVP with OF Caroline Cartron, 1B Tessa Word and IF Laura Leigh Wheeler joining her for being honored in their role of helping the team to the top prize.
Wheeler stood out with 8 runs batted in during their victory against Northwest Shoals. She had a double and a home run with Wallace scoring 10 runs in the final two innings in pulling away from the Lady Patriots.
Word accounted for a home run to help the Lady Lions conquer Snead.
Katie Simon showed her stuff inside the circle vs. Northwest Shoals, allowing two hits, 1 walk and a game high 11 strikeouts.
Simon has found her rhythm with her earned run average dropping to 2.99, the best of the season.
Cartron climbed to 4th in conference hitting, raising her average to .406.
Simon was selected 1st team all conference, being joined by Wheeler, 3B Bayleigh Rouse.
The pairings for the national will be announced Tuesday. The tournament starts at Choccolocco Park May 20.
