GDW Analysis:
OXFORD: Wallace State is still winning on the softball diamond at the present time.
The Lady Lions now have 11 consecutive victories.
Opening the NJCAA tournament Monday from Choccolocco Park, the 11th seed Lady Lions took down 6th seed Salt Lake by the final of 9 to 6.
The champion of the ACCC and South District produced three runs in the top of the first to take the lead and was able to stay ahead of the Lady Bears the rest of the way.
Salt Lake closed to 3 to 2 in the last of the 1st. Another 3 run inning came for Lauren Stewart's Lady Lions in the 5th and 3 more runs went on the scoreboard in the 7th.
On the day, the Lady Lions produced 14 hits, 2 home runs from freshman Bayleigh Rouse. Rouse would account for 5 runs batted in.
Sophomore Jessie Taylor tallied a pair of RBIs, Laura Leigh Wheeler and Brandy Phillips collected one each.
Balance was shown in the batters box with Caroline Cartron, Wheeler, Rouse, Haley Hollyhand, Taylor and Phillips producing a pair of hits.
Coach Stewart went with the sister combo of Emily and Katie Simon in the circle.
Emily worked the first four innings, allowing Salt Lake 3 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Her sister Katie, the MVP from the district tournament, took over in the 5th. She would give up 3 runs on 4 hits, but had 5 strikeouts.
Katie has struck out 24 batters in her last three appearances and allowed only five runs.
Wallace State is now 36 & 12 on the season.
Salt Lake dropped to 47 & 8.
The next game for the Lady Lions will be Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. CST with the opponent to be announced.
